Pattern Trends - Giving it a Swirl
The influence of geometrics on surface pattern design for homeware products has been has been
immense over the last three years - it is now evolving into more organic mid century interpretations
with softer block shapes, textures and layering showing the effects of individual style and handwork.
Along with geometrics is the influence of marble and wood textures - the combining of these in
creative ways for aesthetically pleasing compositions often resulting in a Scandanavian/Nordic
minimal look. What I am really enjoying at present is the fluid marbling swirl trend that is recently
emerging on tableware of which examples are shown below. Some products have an exceptional
Over 6 years ago I was painting the roof of our ‘60’s bach and purchased some metalic silver paint.
When stirring the paint in preparation for painting I noticed the interesting swirl effect and
photogaphed it. The files have been sitting around since and I recently relooked at them and spent
a short time manipulating the images. Three of the results are shown below.
