Shop Focus – ABODE
363 Colombo St, Sydenham, Christchurch 8011
There is never a dull moment when you’re in the company of Vanessa & Sharne, owners of Abode in Christchurch.
Opening the doors for the first time in August 2014 it was a new chapter for these two, but endless creativity, boundless passion & old fashioned teamwork has seen their unique style go from strength to strength.
In the short time since opening the duo have doubled their floor space, expanded into furniture pieces & acquired a rather handsome Frenchie called George (who is always in store to help you choose your kitchen desirable).
Honing their craft & Friendship for 5 years, these two have a recipe and it works!
I sat down for a quick chat and a flick through the photo album of abode so far.
"The absolute best kitchen homeware store around!"
How did you two meet?
"We meet working for a mutual friend in a gift store and developed a great friendship."
When did you decide to go into business on your own?
"We decided after a few years of working together to strike out on our own. Food is a passion we both share and we felt like there are a lot of great gift/homeware stores around, so we wanted to focus on kitchenware - as we both agree it is the heart of a home!"
As partners how do you complement each other?
"We are very lucky that we have found each other. We feed off each other's ideas, are very open and honest. We think it's very important in a partnership like ours to have specific job roles so you aren't treading on each other's toes. Vanessa is our administration and accounting director, and I (Sharne) the buyer and creative director."
What inspires you?
"The most inspiring thing is customers coming in and appreciating what we do. We work very hard and have come a long way since we started. The support of our customers means a great deal to us."
Favourite Jason Product to date?
"Ooo that's a hard one! I think it will have to be the New Zealand made cross placemats."
Plans for the future?
"We would love to do some travelling and source some great products that are not available in New Zealand. I would particularly like to go to Denmark, the styles and designs are so well made and never date."
